10 RELIABLE BASICS WITH WHO WHAT WEAR

What do straight-leg jeans, a blazer, and a white button-down all have in common? They are the holy trinity of closet essentials! Being in our 50’s, both of us have definitely had our share of “what were we thinking” fashion moments. But through a lot of hit or miss over the years, experimenting with different styles and trends, we have learned one crucial tip that we now swear by. Basics are your best friend. A leather jacket is a no-brainer in our arsenal of basics. Keeping it simple and basic with my friend and blogging partner Melissa Meyers and Who What Wear.

A pop of red adds a little flair to a classic, structured shape.

A blazer is a non-negotiable essential and you can never have too many. Wear a black belted blazer with a denim skirt trend to add a level of chic off-duty style, or pair a boyfriend cut with other classic besties like a white t-shirt, and jeans or a silk midi.

Thankfully, as we’ve gotten older our fashion choices have gotten wiser! We’ve each developed our own signature styles by anchoring with the basics and then adding accessories and seasonal trends to bring out our fashion personalities. Just as a house needs a solid foundation to build upon, so do our wardrobes. In addition to a few other key pieces like a crew neck sweater, white t-shirt, leather jacket, trench coat, black boots, and a classic handbag, basics are the building blocks of an always put-together wardrobe.

High, low, or over the knee, boots are always made for walking…in style. Oh, and let’s not forget our favorite animal print…leopard! This classic cat has definitely made its way to basics status in our fashion bibles.

Technically a blazer with matching pants, every boss babe, aspiring and established, sure doesn’t hurt to own one of these. Or just go solid and throw a coat or blazer over your “old-faithful” uniform.

Nothing says crisp, clean and fresh like the perfect fitting white button-down. Our motto- when you find one you like, buy a few! Melissa and I are big fans of Franne Golde and Grayson.

Straight-leg denim paired with the right shoe - classic pump or boots- can amp up your business casual look, taking you from a lunch meeting to an evening of cocktails and brainstorming…or in our case, traveling!

Acting as the perfect canvas to experiment with trends, these staples can take you from casual to chic in a New York fashion week minute! And best of all, they don’t have to be expensive!

STYLISH STAPLES FOR ALL OCCASIONS

Fall is in the air and it's my favorite time of the year. The minute there's a hint of chilI in the air and I have a chance to wear a sweater, I'm thrilled! I first saw this sweater on a friend of mine and shortly thereafter Who What Wear wrote, This was the "Must-Have Sweater for Fall" Guess what... It's from ZARA and it's a for sure a winner. 

I'm loving the look of sweaters worn over slip dresses, it's effortless style. I grabbed my favorite Clare V Clutch and YSL vintage earrings. Try wearing a fun color clutch with colorful earrings...plus soft blues (turquoise) and greens...those beautiful jewel tones can be so flattering against your skin. The slipress is a refreshing change, provides nice coverage & It's nice to give my jeans a rest.

You can never go wrong with a classic high-heeled pointed toe Manolo Blahnik. Defenitely worth the investment.

Lately, I've been living in these AMO JEANS. I have a go-to look when I'm rushing out the door for meetings or dinner, but it's dependable and always works. Jeans, a great top... here I'm wearing a camisole, which I seem to be throwing on a lot these days. You can find beautiful ones with lace trim, and they look so pretty when the lace is a little exposed. Can't go wrong with a stylish blazer, fun tops, camisoles, and heels. Bright one's and go for the animal print too.

J. Crew is a great fit, and if you're petit they have small sizes that need zero alterations. 

Christian Dior makes this beautiful heel, but there are other brands that have great options.

Pretty Pink Details on the inside.

Flip up the collar for a peek-a-boo of the pink detail along with a tie-inspired lining and contrast piping, plus a handkerchief pocket for stashing things like headphones or your favorite lipstick... for me, it would be reading glasses.

Have you tried a bright color or an animal print with your jeans & blazer?  J. Crew, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Dior make amazing heels in beautiful bright colors. For choosing what works in your 40's or 50's can sometimes be confusing, or you might feel limited. There is no reason to limit ourselves to "rules" yes...there are looks that will never go out of style and I adore those classic favorites, but 50 is the new 40 and why not have fun as you reinvent yourself? Don't forget to have a great attitude when you're choosing your wardrobe, it make's fashion a lot easier to navigate...along with life.

How about a fun sweatshirt with a flowing skirt and heels?   J.Crew has a nice selection of sweatshirts with a little style.

Yes, these beauties are a bit high, but this sexy suede platform gives that added comfort you need in a high heel, and the tie around the ankle gives a nice support.

COZY IN CRIMSON CASHMERE

Having my coffee one morning while  flipping through Instagram ...I came across the page of Lindavwright.  Seeing photos of a poised and chic woman wearing beautiful scarves on the streets of Paris was eye candy to me, so I began to follow her. After a little more investigating I discovered she had a boutique in Paris France, called Crimson Cashmere; located right in the heart of the Triangle d’or. We were on our way to Paris for summer vacation and staying in that area, so  I had to pay her a visit. After a few more “likes” on her page, I found her on Facebook, Pinterest, then I noticed she was a Texan, and from my hometown Fort Worth!  Yee-Haw...Now I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to meet her and make a connection with a Texan living in Paris. After breakfast, we strolled to the boutique and found Linda. There she was... chic, relaxed and tall!  Linda has incredible style and of course the boutique was charming. I couldn’t resist this beautiful blue Cashmere sweater that made it’s way home with a Texan, who loves Paris.

The shelves were stocked with beautiful colors. I chose this tropical blue cashmere sweater. I thought it would be perfect for our California weather. I'm a fan of the color combo- blue and brown.
